The BDS movement is a Palestinian-led global non violent movement calling for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against Israel until it complies with international law and Palestinian rights. The movement was launched over 18 years ago by the biggest social and political Palestinian coalition representing 170 Palestinian organizations.
This event will feature three speakers who will discuss the history of the BDS movement, its campaigns in the Global South and the Global North, and its challenges and successes.
The first speaker, Mahmoud Nawajaa, is a co-founder of the Palestinian BDS National Committee. He will discuss the origins of the BDS movement and how it has built and maintained consensus for over 18 years, on the analysis of the problem and the strategy and tactics to dismantle it. What decision making norms and structure can you put in place for a coalition of over 170 organizations?
The second speaker, Apoorva Gautam, Asia Pacific Coordinator of the Movement, will discuss specific BDS campaigns in the Global South, such as the campaign targeting Israeli agro companies and how the concepts of tactical autonomy, context sensitivity and intersectionality around issues like greenwashing, security cooperation and food autonomy have proven vital to the development of global coalitions and campaigns anchored in the local realities of each country.
The third speaker, Fiona Ben Chekroun, Europe Coordinator of the movement, will discuss how the BDS movement’s campaigns in the Global North are trying to deconstruct a system of deep-seated complicity with the Israeli regime, anti-Palestinian racism, while facing unprecedented global attempts to repress the movement.
This event will also be an opportunity to build meaningful connections, deepen our understanding of how the struggle of the BDS movement intersect with other struggles around the world and how we can get involved.
As November 29 will mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, this event will finally provide an opportunity to connect with others who share the same commitment to freedom, justice and equality, learn more about the intersections between the BDS movement and other struggles around the world, and explore ways to get involved and reinforce already existing coalitions.
The LCN is a non-violent, pro-democracy organization. We believe in the sanctity of all lives, and we believe the loss of all lives is tragic and needs to be avoided at all costs.
