What is public narrative?

Public narrative is a leadership practice that enables people to act on shared values and join together in collective action. By telling our story of self, story of us, and story of now, we can articulate the origins of why “I” care (who am I), why “we” care (who are we as a community), and why “now” (urgency), and motivate people to join us. Nguyễn Duy Độ sinh ra và lớn lên tại tỉnh Bắc Ninh, trong một gia đình mang nhiều giá trị truyền thống, nơi việc giáo dục con cái thường gắn liền với những kỳ vọng cao và khuôn mẫu nghiêm khắc. Từ khi còn nhỏ, Độ đã chịu ảnh hưởng sâu sắc từ môi trường này, dẫn đến những tổn thương tâm lý kéo dài mà bản thân em không có cơ hội gọi tên hay chia sẻ.

Trong hành trình trưởng thành, Độ dần nhận ra rằng những tổn thương chưa được chữa lành có thể tiếp tục tái tạo bạo lực – từ việc bị tổn thương trở thành người gây tổn thương cho người khác. Việc tham gia chương trình Public Narrative đã giúp Độ nhìn lại câu chuyện của chính mình, hiểu rõ nguồn gốc của những hành vi đó và chủ động lựa chọn con đường thay đổi.

Độ quyết định chia sẻ câu chuyện không chỉ để chữa lành cho bản thân, mà còn với mong muốn rằng những người trẻ khác đang ở trong hoàn cảnh tương tự có thể cảm thấy được nhìn thấy, được thấu hiểu và biết rằng họ không đơn độc. Đối với Độ, việc kể lại câu chuyện này là một bước đi nhỏ nhưng cần thiết để mở ra đối thoại, phá vỡ vòng lặp bạo lực và nuôi dưỡng hy vọng về sự thay đổi tích cực cho thế hệ trẻ.

Nguyen Duy Do was born and raised in Bac Ninh province, Vietnam, in a traditional family where child-rearing was closely associated with high expectations and strict norms. Growing up in this environment deeply affected Do, leaving him with emotional wounds that he lacked the language or space to express at the time.

As he matured, Do gradually came to understand that unresolved trauma can perpetuate cycles of violence—turning those who were once hurt into individuals who may unintentionally hurt others. Through participating in the Public Narrative program, Do was able to reflect on his personal story, identify the roots of his behaviors, and make a conscious decision to change.

Do chose to share his story not only as a step toward personal healing, but also in the hope that other young people facing similar struggles might feel seen, understood, and less alone. For him, telling this story represents a meaningful effort to break cycles of violence, open space for dialogue, and inspire positive change within his generation.

WECARE là một tổ chức do cộng đồng dẫn dắt, được sáng lập bởi thanh thiếu niên cùng các thành viên thuộc những nhóm yếu thế và dễ bị tổn thương. Với tầm nhìn hướng tới một xã hội công bằng, lành mạnh và bao trùm – nơi không ai bị bỏ lại phía sau – WECARE hoạt động tại giao điểm giữa nghiên cứu, giáo dục và thực hành cộng đồng trong các lĩnh vực sức khỏe cộng đồng, quyền con người và hành động vì khí hậu, lấy công bằng và phát triển bền vững làm nền tảng xuyên suốt.

WECARE Center is a community-led organization founded by youths and members of disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. Guided by the vision of creating a just, healthy, and inclusive society where no one is left behind, WECARE positions itself at the intersection of research, education, and community practice in the fields of public health, human rights, and climate action, with equity and sustainability at the core of its work.

To achieve its mission, WECARE promotes the rights, equity, and well-being of key populations through:

(a) Strengthening the capacity, leadership, and voices of historically and socio-economically disadvantaged communities, particularly youth and marginalized groups;

(b) Designing and implementing research-informed and education-based initiatives in health, environment, and culture, grounded in genuine community participation; and

(c) Connecting community actors, experts, practitioners, and institutions to foster multi-sectoral collaboration and build a long-term, effective, and sustainable development ecosystem.
