The campaign document is an output document that comes out of the Story, Strategy, Structure (SSS) workshop. It's a documentation of what the core team has agreed on or discussed with regard to 5 areas: campaign story, campaign strategy, campaign structure, and campaign timeline. This template, used in the SSS workshop in Uganda in 2024, is built from several iterations of running SSS workshops over the years in different contexts by different people and organizations from the LCN network.

What is the campaign document?
It’s an output document that comes out of the SSS workshop. It’s a documentation of what the core team has agreed on or discussed with regard to these areas:

  • Campaign story: How did this group come together? What motivates them to belong to this campaign? What’s their challenge now? How will they deal with it? The aim is to document the values of the campaign leadership and own the narrative of who we are and what is our problem.
  • Campaign strategy: In this part, we document the vision, strategic objectives to reach the vision, the specific objective which will be targeted through their campaign, and their theories of change to achieve it.
  • Campaign structure: What kind of teams will the campaign recruit and build and why?
  • Campaign timeline which shows the various milestones of the campaign.

Why develop the campaign document?
It’s a place to save all the thoughts and developments of the campaign leadership, keep track of what they agreed on, and minimize misunderstanding. Second, it’s a reference for the campaign leadership to develop from it their various other tools, electronic or printed, such as the following:

  • About us
  • Demands and its legal or social or economic references
  • The campaign petition (when applicable)
  • The leadership team values chart
  • The frequently asked questions targeting the campaign
  • The campaign action plan
  • Brief about the issue and the problem
  • The story of the campaign and how it started
  • The campaign strategic objective and strategies
  • The campaign timeline
  • The campaign snowflake structure

Additional Annexes

  • Campaign name and slogan & logo- once agreed upon with reasoning on it and various brainstormed options until decision.
  • Risks
  • Laws & regulations relevant to the campaign
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Core team purpose, norms and roles

Some campaigns add various annexes like 1) information packet about the issue, where they put legal annexes or historical background depending on the campaign. It usually can contain numbers and facts. 2) campaign values chart, what do we practice and what not. Also clarification on political affiliations or not when applicable. 3) Say and don’t say- it’s usually a kind of support paper for campaign leadership to know how to express the issue and campaign objectives. It supports them to answer the frequently asked questions properly. 4) the campaign petition or statement- this is an expression of the campaign aim and objective. 5) other stuff based on campaign.

How many pages?
It varies from campaign to another. It can start with 10 pages and grow.

How much time does it take to develop it?
The campaign core team develops the first and second draft after the SSS workshop, and then starts using parts of it here and there. The document is also inserted in the participants guide of the CO workshop targeting the growing leadership so that they read it. It’s an ongoing alive document that keeps developing with the life of the campaign.  The story grows and sometimes strategy changes, which are reflected in the document.

Who do we share it with?
It usually stays with campaign leadership, supporters and volunteers. It’s not a public document though part of it could be public. The secrecy is mostly in the strategy and tactics to keep them confidential until the right time.
