This PowerPoint introduces public narrative as a framework for leadership and organizing, drawing on the foundational work of Marshall Ganz and developed by trainers with experience in public narrative projects in Myanmar.
This is not a direct translation of the original material. It is a careful adaptation shaped to Myanmar’s social and cultural realities, developed to resonate with Myanmar civil society organizations and health workers navigating change in complex and often difficult contexts. The concepts and practices have been grounded in the lived experiences of people working collectively to build health systems and organized action from within their communities. The materials were designed with adult learners in mind, people with substantial field experience but limited exposure to formal leadership development frameworks.
The slides are used in multi-day leadership workshops. Facilitators use them to introduce each element of the Public Narrative arc, beginning with why story matters in leadership, then guiding participants to identify their own Story of Self (a defining challenge and the values it revealed), their Story of Us (shared identity and purpose with their community), and their Story of Now (the urgent challenge and the ask). Participants then practice delivering their narratives in small groups and receive peer and facilitator feedback. The presentation functions as both a conceptual primer and a practical workshop guide.
Workshops based on this presentation are implemented by Community Partners International (CPI) and the Equity Initiative (EI) Myanmar Fellows program to strengthen the capacity of individuals and groups to lead change together. Beyond the training room, the Public Narrative framework is intended to equip leaders with a durable communication tool they carry into their communities, organizations, and advocacy spaces.
