¡El Poder de las Historias! LCN’s First Community of Practice Session to Practice Story of Self in Spanish!

Leading Change Network is thrilled to announce the success of our first-ever skill practice session on Story of Self in Spanish! Held on April 18th, this session brought together 19 organizers and storytellers from across Latin America, eager to harness the power of Public Narrative in building power for change.
A heartfelt gratitude goes out to our incredible facilitators Cynthia Jaramillo and Sam Gonzalez from Mexico, who led the way with their expertise and dedication. They built a welcoming space for learning, growth, and practice – a space where participants could deepen their understanding of the narrative craft and strengthen their storytelling skills to inspire hope and action within their communities.

With support from Cynthia and Sam, they jumped on the bike, sharing their stories with one another

The 90 min session explored the key elements of an effective and powerful Story of Self as participants reflected on their values and experiences prompted by the question: “When did I learn to care? What calls me to leadership?” With support from Cynthia and Sam, they jumped on the bike, sharing their stories with one another, as well as coaching each other to further improve their stories.

Here are some key takeaways from the session:

  • If I am not for myself, who am I? In the story of self, each person is the main protagonist. It is essential to recognize and honor one’s own experience.
  • The power of questions. In coaching, questions play a crucial and powerful role. They are key to exploring fundamental details of one’s own story.
  • Bringing alive story moments. It is essential to share significant moments, detail sensory experiences and express ourselves in the first person.

We are also excited to feature on the LCN Resource Center the resources coming out of this session: a brief video introducing the concepts on Story of Self! (requires member log-in). See below for this resource.

The enthusiasm from the participants is a testament to the power of narrative in building leadership and change. We are excited about the appetite from the participants for more spaces in Spanish to connect, learn, and grow. Stay tuned, as Leading Change Network is committed to cultivating more spaces for learning and practice for our vibrant Latin American community!
