People, Power, Change: Organizing for Democratic Renewal
Marshall Ganz’s New Book
“A spirited, encouraging handbook for progressive organizing. . . . The user’s manual that progressives have been missing until now—highly recommended.” – Kirkus Reviews
“In his book Marshall Ganz shares his brilliance about how people learn. His thinking and practice cut across issue lines to the core of how people can organize to create real change. This politically urgent book unlocks decades of transformational work.” – Jane McAlevey, author of Rules to Win By
“An accessible manual on how to bring about meaningful social change. . . . Ganz’s can-do-ism is a welcome counterpoint to recent books bemoaning a decline in civic engagement.” – Publishers Weekly
“If there was ever a moment when this message needed to be heard, this is it! Read it, and then get to work!” – Bill McKibben, author of The Flag, the Cross, and the Station Wagon
About People, Power, Change
“Over the course of nearly six decades, I’ve learned that people can indeed find the courage to lead, the solidarity to engage with each other, and the imagination to turn the resources they have into the power they need to get what they want.” – from the Introduction
Published by Oxford University Press, the book is rooted in 60 years of experience and draws on the values, ideas, and skills driving an actionable framework of how to do it: the creation and substance of relationships, the fuel of values and narrative, the resources and power of strategy, the accountability of action, and the necessity of structure. As democracy teeters on a precarious edge in this upcoming election, and as political, economic, and technological forces have weakened nearly all capacity for collective action, Ganz has distilled a half-century’s worth of insights into an urgent call for strengthening democracy. Written in the tradition of classics like Saul Alinsky’s 1972 Rules for Radicals, Ganz’s transformational book is at once a practical guide on how to reclaim democratic power and an inspiring manifesto for collective organizing as an essential driver of democracy.
