How can we effectively support leadership on the ground through training and coaching?

LCN member We Own It’s mission is to enable rural electric cooperative member-owners to organize to build power and ensure their co-op is democratically controlled for the community’s benefit. Their main program is a nine-month organizing fellowship.

After experimenting with an NGO-focused support program, We Own It worked with LCN to change approaches. Together, we designed a distributed “directed network” organizing program with a significant emphasis on leadership development and benefits directly to the constituents and community. The program consists of online training, in-person workshop, and intensive coaching, along with a stipend.

Now in its second year, the fellowship program has trained 65 organizers across the US. This year’s program includes 33 participants across 17 US states. Organizers celebrated a win in January when a $1.4B coal-heavy co-op announced the early retirement of 50% of its coal assets and a commitment to 50% renewable energy by 2024.

In our March ‘How to’ session, we will be joined by Jake Schlachter and Dusan Stojicic from the We Own It team. Come and hear how they structure training and coaching to develop new leaders and support real campaigns on the ground!
